What to plant: The Self Watering
Planter can be used for almost any plant. Obviously suitable
for moisture loving indoor plants like ferns, it is equally
suitable for plants that require less water, such as succulents.
The reason for this is two fold:
unlike all regular pots, there is no saturated zone at the
bottom of the pot- this zone moves to the water reservoir
area which is well below the root zone. Second, since the
media is bottom watered, air spaces in it remain open and
aerated, unlike regular pots where every watering floods
these air spaces.
What Media to Use: Any media will
do but a SOILLESS media is strongly
recommended. Such a media will be clean and non-staining
as well as absorb water better. Media with a substantial
portion of coconut coir will give the best results. Pure
coarse coconut coir will work for many plants or mix it
with shredded thermocole, peanut husk, stone chips or other
drainage materials to increase aeration.
How to Plant:
Fill in the water absorbing central column with coir or
the media and press gently till filled. Insert the black
watering pipe into the side hole till secure. Take plant
out of the old container and remove as much as possible
of the old media if it contains soil. Hold it in the centre
of the Self Watering Planter and fill the surrounding area
with new media. Make sure the plant is at the same soil
depth as before. Water once thoroughly through the media.
Discard water collected in base tray as it will be discolored.
In future water through the black watering pipe.
Maintenance:
Once the plant is in place and the media has been moistened,
you need to water only when the water in the reservoir dries
out. Once it is dry, allow 2- 3 days for the soil to dry
out somewhat before watering again. After several months,
you may need to leach the soil of accumulated salts by watering
thoroughly through the media from the top and discard the
water that drains out below. If your water quality is bad
you need to do this more often.
Feeding: It is
very easy to fertilize plants in the Self Watering Planter:
use a good liquid fertilizer and add a few drops into the
reservoir before adding water.
Alternately, dilute the fertilizer to half recommended strength
(remember you are feeding constantly) and use this instead
of plain water.
